Abstract

Typical organizations, including corporates, military, government, etc, are structured hierarchically, and its performance is closely related to the individuals within the hierarchy and their positions. If we assume the personnel turnover in the organizations, how to promote and fire individuals is a critical question in enhancing the performance. This paper presents 1) a simple social simulation replicating such personnel management in a hierarchy, and 2) an effective strategy for decision making on the dismissal of employees over time. The simulation model describes an organization based on a binary tree data structure, and the model evaluates every individual from the various perspectives to identify the weakest individual to fire and its suitable replacement. We compared our strategy with the traditional method, such as firing based upon a nominal work evaluation. Our method showed a statistically significant improvement of the organizational performance. We expect that such experimental result will shed light on how to design personnel management strategy in diverse organizations.
